"A great, local show! If you've not seen Rocky Racoon, get out for awhile and enjoy an awesome Rockumentary."

"A Show For The Beatles Fan
I'm not a musician; I'm a Beatles Fan. As a Beatles Fan I didn't have high expectations before attending a performance of Rocky Raccoon, an Iowa-based Beatles tribute band. I figured it would be a "good-not-great" performance of Beatles covers; a milky sleepwalk through all the Beatles mega hits known to even the most casual fan in the audience.
What I got instead was a fabulous, spot-on deep dive into the Beatles catalog. I mean, c'mon, who expected an early number to be the not-so-classic "You Can't Do That"? It's a song that John Lennon, during his most prolific period, cranked out for the film "A Hard Day's Night". (George Martin: ‘Boys, we're going to put you in a movie but we're going to need 11 brand new, original songs.' John Lennon: 'Okay, we'll have them to you by Friday.")
Over 50 years later it gets a bit lost in Beatles lore. But Rocky Raccoon performed it with amazing nuance. And at the end of the song when my friend whispered to me "was that really a Beatles song?" I realized that this concert was for me. Sure, they did a "Yellow Submarine" sing-a-long later in the first act to keep the show from becoming too pretentious, but it was clearly a show designed for the serious Beatles Fan.
(Exhibit B: The second act included a jaw-dropping run-through of the Abbey Road side 2 medley. All. Of. It. By that point in the show they were on fire. On. Freaking. Fire.)
(Exhibit C: Any technical glitch [and there were a few] was covered with a Liverpudlian "We'll have Mal get right on that." Yeah, you get it.)
My two requests for next time: Back in the U.S.S.R and Let It Be (hey, I like the Mega Hits too). And my one suggestion: During the "In Memoriam" video at the end, a beautiful tribute to those in the Beatles-family who've died including the likes of John, the Georges, Brian Epstein (and Mal!), it would be a nice touch to add Stu Sutcliffe. The casual fan might not pick up on that; but this show isn't really for them, now is it."
